Fall Prevention is a Team Effort

News & Updates, Tabor Village

Research has shown that falls are the main reason why older adults lose their independence. According to SeniorsBC, without prevention efforts, about one third of people aged 65 and older typically fall once or more each year. Staying fall-free can help older adults stay independent and avoid the need to enter a long-term care facility. Studies have shown that there are a number of ways to reduce the risk of falling. These include improving mobility, correcting vision and hearing problems, and reducing trip and slip hazards in your home or outdoors. The Government of British Columbia, in conjunction with SeniorsBC and the British Columbia Medical Association, have produced a pamphlet to assist older adults in testing for risk of fall. This pamphlet, along with other tips and information, is available on the internet at https://www.health.gov.bc.ca/prevention/fallbrochures.html. By working together, we can all do our part in reducing falls and promoting independence in our community.
